Dwarf-Land status

This weekend I start down what I hope is the home stretch for Dwarf-Land.  I’ll be working from the excellent map I commissioned from Russ Nicholson.  The plan is to provide a brief blurb detailing each of the locales marked on the map, along with some detail of the wilderness areas that Russ has populated with weird little thingies.  Also a bit about some of the setting’s main NPCs.  It will not be exhaustive – think World of Greyhawk Folio edition.

I’d also like to provide sparse notes regarding the encroaching Men, their empires, and their awful gods and sorcerers, as the ultimate conflict in Dwarf-Land from my point of view stems from the juxtaposition of 1.) the fairy-tale-ish Dwarf-Land with 2.) the dark S&S-ish (or traditional D&D-ish) elements that surround and will inevitably swallow it.

I’m not writing up a dungeon.  I’ll provide notes as to potential dungeon sites and what I think dungeons might be like in Dwarf-Land and its surroundings.  I don’t expect anyone to actually run Dwarf-Land, I just like showing people this doofy fun thing I’ve been working on, so I don’t really see a need for a dungeon.

No timetable.  I do gaming stuff when I can; when I can’t, I just can’t.  It’ll be done when it’s done.  I hope it’s relatively soon.

When it is done, I’ll get a paper photocopy to as many of the folks who’ve requested one as I can, probably about twenty if there’s still that much interest.  I don’t want to send it out as a .pdf, I want to send it out as paper, so that’s how it’ll go out.  What happens once it’s released into the wild is none of my business, although it’d be cool if you were to send at least one photocopy to someone I couldn’t get to.  I leave that stuff to whoever’s individual discretion.  It will be free and I don’t want anyone’s money for postage or any of that crap; if I can’t afford to send out twenty envelopes, I should probably be doing something more productive than writing about wee little people.

I may do some excerpts here as I work on them, but I’ll probably just post when it’s finished.

Well it sounds freaking awesome and you can absolutely put me down as interested! Is it too late to get on that list?

    • Scott says:

I’ll do my best to keep track of everyone who wants a copy, although in some cases that may be so I can pass it along to someone else who’s willing to send out copies (and several have indicated they’ll do so). I think I’m well over 20 requests, but who knows how many of those folks are still paying any attention.

      • mikemonaco says:

Fair enough! I am sure my brother and at least one of the guys I game with will want a copy, and I’d copy it for them, but I will understand if it’s first come first served!

  2. Brendan says:

    Really looking forward to this.

  3. I am glad you are still working on this, I am still very keen to receive a copy when it is completed.

  4. Ben L. says:

Me too! Glad you’re still thinking about it.

  5. Good to hear from you.

I’d like a copy whenever it’s finished, and I’d be glad to make a couple of copies to forward on.

  6. Cole says:

Good to hear you still think upon matters of the short and inhuman from time to time,

  7. Mark says:

I am very excited. Ever since I saw the rough draft many moons ago, I have been waiting for the final product with baited breath!

  8. Aaron Funk says:

Good news! Be interesting to see the “final” version as well as any previews if you decide to share them. Pace your self though and take care.

  9. Still paying attention, still enthused.

  10. brink. says:

I, too, anxiously await Dwarf-Land. If I’m lucky enough to get a copy, I’d be more than happy to make copies and send them along to whoever.

  11. Duglas says:

I would be interested in a copy, Scott, if there is enough to go around. Otherwise, I will try to hunt somebody down who does have a copy. Thanks for sharing your creative endeavors.

  12. Jonas says:

Are you going to put contact information like PO box or something there so you can track by postcards, letters etc. people send you how your work spreads across the globe?

I’m of course interested in having a copy and participating in sending copies forward. This distribution method intrigues me because instead of anonymous PDF-download there is certain level of gamer to gamer interaction which is directly opposed to model where PDF would be put up, there would be few thousand downloads and nobody or only handfull of people discuss the game and that’s it, kind of like blog post that has huge amount of genuine views but no comments, there is no idea what did the readers think of it.

    • Scott says:

I’ll probably put my PO box in a note at the back, so if anyone wants to drop a postcard they’re welcome to, as long as they don’t do anything silly like trying to send me money. I don’t have any agenda in choosing this distribution method. I just miss sending and getting things in the mail, and I’m in a position where I can (at least at the very beginning) impose my quixotic yearnings on everyone else. I assume that at some point someone will scan the thing and make an end run around my quirk, but that’s the way of the world now and I have few illusions of control.

      • Jonas says:

I do not suspect any agenda, sometimes there is non-measurable value in action itself and I’m not going put a price tag on something deliberately sent to world free.

  13. Reynaldo says:

I’m really excited about this – I’m a bit of a late comer, but I’d like to voice my desire to be on the list too.

  14. Akiyama says:

I would very much like a copy, if there is one available, and if you’re able to post to the UK. If not, I’ll be patient and wait until someone scans it. My address is MODGNIK DETINU QB7 1LS ,erihsmahgnikcuB ,mahnruB ,daoR notgnilruB 62 ,amayikA nitraM

    • Scott says:

Based on requests outside of the US, I’m going to try to get at least one copy each to the UK, continental Europe, and Australia/NZ to expedite distribution for anyone who’s interested. I’ll post details whenever the thing is done and go from there.

  15. crusssdaddy says:

I’m not going to purchase this unless there’s a pdf.

  16. chunkbot says:

I happened upon the map a few months ago (whenever it was that it was posted) and I woul love to buy a photocopied version.

  17. fictivite says:

This is simply amazing! I would love to have a copy, and I’m willing to send it on to someone else too.

  18. Sign me up man.

    Almost level capped Darf.

  19. nzpainter4 says:

I’d be interested in this thanks. I’m in Auckland, New Zealand & would be able to forward to any one in NZ interested.
(I hope I’m not the only Kiwi reading this, but who knows?)
The work on the map is spectacular & deserves the widest possible audience!!
When you posted it initially, I saved the image & have just noted that it’s c.12Mb, so am hoping to take it to a print place as resolution should be excellent – will get back to you on that.

  20. I know I’m late to the post party, but I too would love a copy of this. Either from you or another fellow.

  21. nerdwolf says:

I’d love a copy when it’s finished and I am willing to send out 7 copies.

    • Scott says:

I’ll keep everyone posted, I’ve made a good amount of progress but am taking a short break to avoid the months of burnout to which I’m normally prone.
